It is the tendency of writers to critique their influences, to comment on other authors' characterization, story, and other aspects of their predecessors' writing. This is the case for J.R.R. Tolkien as many of his characters in his epic fantasy, The Lord of the Rings, are directly influenced by Edmund Spenser's character in his epic, The Faerie Queene. Whether Tolkien meant to comment on Spenser directly, his mind had the influence there from having read Spenser, possibly studied him, and in creating similar characters, he has commentary in the way that his characters' stories pan out.
